Exploring Malta - Day 1
Gozo, Mdina, Malta
EUROPEITALYTRAVEL
Today we took the ferry to Victoria! Well, sort of, Victoria is on Gozo, Malta’s sister island to the north. We took our car over on Malta’s very efficient ferry service. Once on Gozo, we drove the narrow roads to one of the oldest monuments in the world, it-Tempji tal-Ġgantija. These rock formations are at least 5500 years old. Then we made our way to the capital of Gozo Island, Victoria, another Game of Thrones filming location.
After wandering around Victoria we took the ferry back to Malta and stopped at the Popeye village, which was purpose-built for the Robin Williams film version of Popeye.
Next up was the Mosta Rotunda which boasts the second largest unsupported dome in the world after the Pantheon in Rome. Under the church, there are tunnels that the residents used as a bomb shelter during WWII.
Mdina and Rabat was our final stop for the day. Mdina was the capital of Malta from antiquity to the late 1500s when the Knights of St. John founded Valletta.
