Crossing the Kosovo Border

Europe's newest country the Republic of Kosovo. Kosovo is only recognized by about half of the UN member states. Most of Europe and Canada do recognize it. It's been the scene of horrific war crimes, and Bill Clinton is considered a hero for ending the conflict here.

There isn't much for tourists to do in the capital, Pristina and no tourist infrastructure at all. The Serbian monastery in Gracancia is worth seeing, however. Too bad no photos were allowed inside as the frescos were unbelievable. Google them.

The highway north from the Macedonian border was brand new, the best road we've driven on the entire trip, it must have been funded by reparation money after the wars.

As we passed the border checkpoint with ease, I couldn't help but think how lucky we are in Canada to hold a Canadian passport. It may not be as powerful as it once was but still ranks very highly. (thanks to the current and former gov't)

When travelling in the Balkans you need to plan your itinerary very carefully. For example, if you have a Kosovo stamp in your passport, you will be denied entry to Serbia. This could make for a very long drive if you need to be somewhere.

We also visited a bear sanctuary outside of Prishtina where bears are rescued from across the Balkans from private owners and many from restaurants. Owners of these restaurants would use these caged bears as a prop to attract customers. Some were only fed bread and beer.
