Italy 2024 Chapter 4 - Sadly, our time in Sicily was up and it was time to cross the strait of Messina to the mainland and Calabria. We stayed in Scilla a beautiful small town right at the toe of the boot with Sicily still within sight across the straight. Scilla is built from the sea up the mountain with houses and roads clinging to the cliff sides and has been inhabited since at least the 5th century BC. Scilla gets its name from Greek mythology, claiming a sea monster named Scylla lived here. She is said to live in the rock under the Castle of Scilla which splits the town in two. The train connects Scilla to Tropea, another cliffside resort town, where we spent a few hours before returning to Scilla for dinner. After a few relaxing days in Calabria, it was time to move on to the oldest city in Italy….
