My Sweet Tobago

My sweet Tobago.

I hired a private guide in Tobago. Junior Thomas met us at the pier and we headed out of Scarborough toward the Caribbean side of Tobago. Tobago’s narrow mountain roads wind through small towns where locals live in year-round great weather. We stopped at several overlooks and forts on our way to the more remote beaches on the island.

Junior showed us a bar that a friend of his owns, I think this bar may have the best view of any bar in the world. Junior lives in Bloody Bay, named for the dozens of bodies that washed up there during a French and Dutch sea battle centuries ago. Junior has several hummingbird feeders and was eager to show the birds that live near his house. One of the birds is native to only Tobago and hummingbird enthusiasts come from all over the world to find them.

Junior then took us on a nature hike through the rainforest that he used as a child to go to school. It’s now in the Gilpin Trace, part of the protected area of Tobago. Walking in the rainforest sounds scary, but there’s nothing in the Tobago rainforest that is dangerous. There are over twenty species of snake, but none are poisonous.

When I emailed Junior a month or so ago about a private tour he responded “I’d love to show you around my sweet Tobago”. He was a great guide and his pride in his island and nature showed.
